Ready to Read is our largest programme, launched in 2016 to help build strong foundations for a lifelong love of reading.

Through weekly one-to-one sessions, trained volunteers from the community and corporate partners support pupils in Years 1 and 2 to practise their reading skills, build confidence, and develop a genuine enjoyment of books.

Each 20-minute session gives children dedicated time to read their school books aloud, followed by shared reading, where volunteers bring stories to life from a carefully curated “reading for pleasure” collection chosen by the pupils. This approach helps to expand vocabulary, strengthen literacy skills and nurture self-esteem, while creating positive and lasting associations with reading.

Now active in all local primary schools, Ready to Read fosters meaningful connections between volunteers and pupils. These relationships are at the heart of the programme’s success; encouraging enjoyment, building trust and inspiring a shared love of reading that can make a lasting difference in every child’s journey.

  • Enhance reading skills

  • Boost confidence and self-esteem

Individual reading is one of the most enjoyable and effective ways to teach reading and the children love it.

I like reading to my volunteer, he is kind and funny.

Child

We are incredibly grateful to have such passionate and committed volunteers supporting our school. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and we hope you know just how much you are valued and appreciated.

Teacher

I believe every child deserves the chance to develop strong reading skills and a love for learning. It’s incredibly rewarding to support their progress and confidence, knowing it can have a lasting impact on their future.

Volunteer

Reading is both a skill and a joy. Through one-to-one support, our dedicated volunteers help children build the confidence to read well and the freedom to read for pleasure. If you have an hour a week during term time to spare, please get in touch to find out more about this rewarding role.
