We are seeking enthusiastic Ready to Read Volunteers to support Year 1 and Year 2 pupils (ages 5-7) in developing their reading skills. Through one to one reading sessions, you’ll help children improve their reading skills, build confidence and foster a love of books.
Location: Primary Schools Across Jersey
Commitment: Term time only, at least one hour per week
Key Responsibilities:
- Work one-on-one with Year 1 or Year 2 pupils to support their reading skills.
- Encourage children to read at their level, build vocabulary, and gain confidence in reading aloud.
- Provide a positive, engaging, and encouraging environment to make reading enjoyable.
- Adhere to safeguarding policies and maintain a supportive, child-friendly approach at all times.
- Work in partnership with school staff and Every Child Our Future to ensure effective sessions.
Skills & Requirements:
- A passion for reading and an understanding of the importance of literacy for young children.
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to create a positive learning environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage and encourage young children.
- Experience working with children in any capacity (e.g., parenting, teaching, or volunteering) is an advantage but not essential.
- Commitment to attending sessions regularly during term time.
- Enhanced DBS check (we can support you in obtaining this).
