Tutoring
NEW! – Autumn 2025
Tutoring - NEW for Autumn 2025!
- One To One Support
- Year 4 (Ages 8-9 Years)
- Partnership with schools
- Professionally Delivered
As we reach the end of 2025, we are proud to celebrate the completion of our very first term of tutoring for Year 4 pupils.
Three schools have taken part, with 21 children receiving weekly one-to-one, personalised support from our experienced teachers and specialist TAs. Each tutor brings a genuine passion for reading and works not only to strengthen pupils’ reading skills, but also to develop their comprehension and inspire a lifelong love of books.
Our pupils have shown exceptional commitment throughout the 10-week programme and, to celebrate their hard work, each child received a book of their choice at the end of the term. The progress we are seeing in our early data is extremely encouraging, and we are excited to build on this success as we look ahead to Term 2.

Speech
& Language
Speech & Language Project
An innovative three-year pilot project instigated by Every Child Our Future has shown what’s possible when the third sector, government, and professionals work in partnership to challenge the status quo.
At the heart of the project is a deceptively simple concept: place experienced Speech and Language Therapists (SALT) directly into nursery and early years settings to work alongside teachers. The aim? Equip educators with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to support communication and language development at a universal and targeted level — long before specialist referrals are needed.
“We are delighted with the success of Every Child Our Future’s pilot,” says Julie McAllister, Teaching and Learning Adviser for Early Years at the Government of Jersey. “Expanding this model across early years settings will improve communication, language, and literacy opportunities and outcomes for all young children. I want to thank the charity for aligning so closely with our priorities — and for their continued partnership.”
The project began in 2022 thanks to a generous grant from the Jersey Community Foundation, which helped fund therapist salaries. The project was delivered in five early years settings in Jersey. One of these saw an increase from under 50% to 90% of children achieving age-appropriate language levels after just two academic years.
This is not just about early literacy. Language skills are critical to a child’s ability to communicate, self-regulate, and build relationships — all of which underpin future learning and life success.
The programme’s structure is twofold: firstly, offering universal training and consultation to all educators and secondly providing targeted support to those children who need that little bit extra. The result? Better levels of language for all and fewer children needing to wait for specialist services — more children getting what they need, when they need it.
The concept was originally envisioned over a decade ago by former headteacher Cris Lakeman, who knew there had to be a better way. Once appointed CEO of Every Child Our Future, she put the vision into motion, building the case for a systemic change that integrates the best of educational and medical models.
“This has been a fantastic opportunity for Speech and Language Therapists to work in genuine partnership with education staff,” says the charity’s CEO Cris Lakeman. “We’ve shown that most children’s needs can be met through quality teaching and early identification — but only if staff are properly supported.”
Now, with government funding secured and the support of the Minister for Education and Life- long learning Rob Ward, the path is clear: scale the model, embed it system-wide, and ensure every child enters school with the language skills they need for their future learning.
“Continued and sustained investment by the Government of Jersey will allow this model to evolve and embed, ensuring every child — regardless of their language profile and start in life — has the support they need to thrive,” says CYPES Minister Rob Ward. “I’d like to thank Every Child Our Future for instigating and rolling out the pilot programme. I’m confident better outcomes can be achieved by investing in this new approach.”
The charity is widely known for its reading programmes and early years literacy projects, but what underpins the charity is serious, evidence-based work. The three years of having experienced Speech and Language Therapists in early years settings is proof of concept. Every Child Our Future has demonstrated there’s a better model — and it’s working.
An independent quality assurance report has also been produced, and can be viewed here.

Story
Trails
Story Trails
Imagine taking a walk through a park or outdoor space, and coming across a page from a children’s book. You continue your walk and discover another page, only to realise that you are reading a story!
Our Story Trails aim to combine early literacy and language, family engagement outdoors and physical activity. We hope to draw people outside to enjoy parks and trails whilst enjoying shared learning time between children, parents and other adults. Story Trails is one of our newest projects, currently still in development. The first one was installed in Howard Davis Park in September 2024, in partnership with PWC, the Rotary Club of Jersey and Parks and Gardens.
Our pilot Story Trail earlier this year demonstrated to us the impact that shared texts in outdoor spaces can have – not only for young and developing readers, but also on their parents and carers, and as it turned out other users of the communal space too. We were thrilled to see community engagement and positive conversations about the story being had, and we hope to build on this concept in more parks and spaces across the island.

Early Years Performances
Early Years Performances
- Early Years
- School partnership
- Professionally delivered
- Theatre in Education
- Multi-language
Our Early Years performances bring live theatre to young learners in our main partner schools. These performances bring a wealth of benefits to children who won’t necessarily have had this experience before. The majority of the performances are traditional tales – linking closely to core book sets that each Nursery and Reception class use throughout their curriculum and supporting the early development of literacy and reading skills, as well as speech and language development. Most performances are also performed in 2 languages – currently English along with Portuguese. We believe this is really important for children who are multi language learners since research shows that improving early literacy skills in a child’s home language has a positive impact on literacy skills in their second language. This programme began with a pilot performance for 2 schools in 2022, followed by 2 performances for 10 schools in 2023. Thanks to funding from The Jersey Community Foundation and Ports of Jersey there will be 4 performances in 2024, with funding currently secured for a further 3 in 2025.

The Big Book Giveaway
Book Ownership
- All Ages
- Early Literacy
- Early Literacy And Communication
- Addressing Inequality
We aim to increase book ownership because research shows that developing good reading habits in childhood requires access to a wide variety of books that are interesting and engaging to the reader. The habit of reading in childhood is associated with improved academic, social and emotional outcomes.(OECD, 2021; Torppa et al., 2020).
We collect good condition pre-loved books, and give them away to be enjoyed by children at every opportunity we get. In 2025 we gave away approximately 3000 books at Children’s Day, our Story Trail launch events, School and community engagement events and through our pop-up library. We have pledged to gift 10,000 books in 2026, to mark our tenth anniversary.
We also have an Amazon wishlist, where books can be purchased for us to gift on, or to add to our lending libraries. Click on our “Amazon wishlist” button:

Summer Reading
Summer Reading
- Professionally Delivered
- School Partnership
- Developing Reading Skills And Enjoyment
Research shows that over the summer months, without regular practice, children's reading skills can decline, but with opportunities to build their decoding skills, and improve fluency and comprehension, this can be avoided. Our Summer READ programme is delivered to children in the summer holiday between Year 3 and Year 4 at Samares School. In 8 weekly sessions held at the school, they choose 8 books and receive reading support and tailored one to one tutoring from trained teachers. We know that spending time one to one with a teacher can have a hugely positive impact on children's self esteem. The programme aims to not only improve the children’s access to books throughout the summer holiday, but also to build their enjoyment and confidence through skills-based work, as well as including a focus on comprehension. We know that children read more throughout the summer holiday as a result of this programme, and that their reading ability is maintained ready for a strong start to Year 4 in September.

Include: CEO for Every Child Our Future, Cris Lakeman, said: “Every Child our Future is delighted to be bringing this programme to the Island. Our charity aims to enable children to achieve their full potential and Inspire the Future Jersey will help children realise that anything is possible for their futures.”
